A Perfect Four Nights in Malta
Some trips stay with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase, and our short break to Malta was definitely one of those. In just four nights, it gave us a sense of history, warmth, and quiet beauty that felt far richer than the time we spent there.
Staying in Valletta meant we were surrounded by history from the moment we stepped outside. There’s something special about the city’s honey-coloured stone and its narrow streets that seem to glow in the sunlight. It invites you to slow down. Wandering through it never felt rushed—more like gently uncovering layers of the past.

That feeling deepened when we stepped inside the remarkable St John’s Co-Cathedral. Its elaborate interior is breathtaking, almost overwhelming in its detail, and completely at odds with the simplicity of its exterior. It’s one of those places that makes you stop and just take everything in.
But it was our visit to the National War Museum that left the strongest impression. Walking through its exhibits, we found ourselves quietly reflecting on the extraordinary courage of the Maltese people during the war. The stories are not just historical, they feel deeply human. It’s hard not to come away with a sense of admiration for the resilience of such a small island in the face of so much.
Even simple moments – like crossing the Grand Harbour by boat felt memorable. Watching Valletta from the water gave us a different perspective, its skyline rising proudly above the harbour walls, shaped by centuries of history.
A change of pace came with a trip inland, where the atmosphere shifted again. In Mdina, time seems to stand still. Its quiet streets and enclosed walls create a calm that’s almost tangible, while nearby Rabat offers a more lived-in contrast. Together, they added another layer to our sense of the island – one that felt both peaceful and deeply rooted in history.
The weather, too, played its part – endless sunshine and warmth that made everything feel just a little more relaxed. Days seemed to stretch out effortlessly, whether we were exploring or simply pausing to enjoy where we were. And, in a small but oddly comforting moment, I even stumbled across Marks & Spencer – an unexpected reminder of home in the middle of the Mediterranean.
Returning each evening to The Boutique was a pleasure in itself. It was more than just a place to stay—the comfort and kindness of the staff made it feel welcoming in a way that’s hard to define but easy to appreciate.
Malta has a way of getting under your skin. It’s not just the landmarks or the views, but the feeling of the place – its history, its resilience, and its quiet charm. It’s somewhere that stays with you, and somewhere we already know we’d love to return to.
